Me

Trucks hitting bridges, Stearman Biplanes and Blue Angels, oh my!

Had an interesting morning Friday morning. As Big-B and I were headed to school, we were heading up Roxboro Road in Durham about to go under the low bridge were it joins up with the Durham loop when I noticed that right in front of us one lane over there was a fairly large truck just about to go under the bridge. I quickly told Big-B that I thought the truck wasn't going to make it under the bridge and then slowed to almost a stop just before going under the bridge so as to not get hit by anything. The main problem with this bridge is that the road under it slopes upwards so that the clearance under it is less at the end than at the beginning. The truck made it under the first part of the bridge, and somehow the front of it made it under the back part of the bridge but apparently the truck's roof itself sloped upwards because just after the front of the truck made it out from under the bridge, the rest of the roof the truck started scraping! Thankfully, by the time the driver figured out what happened, the truck had literally just scraped through! I think it flattened the roof a bit, but hopefully no major damage, at least to the cargo inside. It did make an awful racket, though!

Later, then, as I was headed to work after dropping off Big-B at school, someone on the Durham Freeway passed me, rolled down their window and proceeded to tell me that my rear driver's side tire was almost flat! So, I stopped by the nearest gas station I could find (which happened to be the BP on 55 just east of 54) and filled it up. It's supposed to be up to 30 PSI but only had 10 PSI in it! Close call!

Today, since [info]jklgoduke was scheduled to sing with the choir at the Duke Baccalaureate, Big-B and I took off to the Wings over Wayne Airshow in Goldsboro, NC. In addition to seeing the first flight of the Blue Angels since their crash last month, we also saw the Red Baron Stearman Biplane troupe. Big-B has had an inflatable one of their planes in his room for years and really, really wanted to see them perform. He wasn't disappointed. I've got quite a few pictures of them and will post them as soon as I sort through all 241 of them (gotta love digital cameras and a 2GB SD card). The one thing I wish I'd remembered was the protective ear coverings that I normally wear when mowing the grass. We tried napkins in Big-B's ear, but that didn't work too well, then went to the info desk and got some free ear plugs there, but had trouble getting them into his small ears. We then tried a different ear plug that I remembered was in my waist pack but to get it in I had to press fairly hard and he didn't like that too much. So, we went back to the napkins in the ear and augmented that with fingers over the ear whenever a plane flew over. That worked pretty well except when they flew over us from behind without us seeing them coming! But, it was a good air show and Big-B was absolutely wonderful. He never complained (except briefly to tell me he didn't like the one set of ear plugs) and did everything I told him. And, he said he had a lot of fun. I was worried beforehand because of the weather report but although it rained on us both coming and going, there was absolutely no rain at the show itself! It was kind of hazy when we got there, but as the day progressed the ceiling just kept getting higher and higher until there was some blue sky just before the Blue Angels took off. Cap it off with a good meal at Crazy Fire in Cary on the way home and all in all it was a good day.

Tomorrow I'm ushering at Duke Chapel while Big-B stays in the nursery (first time on a Sunday this calendar year) and [info]jklgoduke stay's home cleaning to get ready for lunch guests. Another involved day like today, but at least with less driving. The tricky part will be finding a parking place at Duke because graduation starts at 9:30am! Hopefully I'll remember [info]jklgoduke's parking pass.

For now, though, bed!
